Investigation of fundraising leads FBI to seize phones of New York Mayor Eric Adams

FBI seizes phones and iPad from NYC Mayor Eric Adams in fundraising investigation.

FBI agents confiscated phones and an iPad from New York City Mayor Eric Adams earlier this week in connection with an ongoing investigation into his campaign fundraising, according to an announcement made by a lawyer for the mayor on Friday.

The agents approached Adams after an event on Monday night and requested his devices, said Boyd Johnson, a lawyer for the mayor’s campaign organization. Johnson stated that the mayor remains committed to cooperating with the investigation and has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Sources familiar with the matter reported that the mayor handed over two cellphones and an iPad after the event, and later turned over additional electronic devices.

Different outlets have reported news about the seizure of the mayor’s devices, and the FBI’s New York City press office has declined to comment on the matter.

On November 2, the FBI searched the New York home of a campaign fundraiser for Adams as part of a federal campaign finance investigation, prompting the mayor to cancel a planned trip to meet with White House officials and return to New York.

Adams, who is a former member of law enforcement, expressed confidence in his campaign organization, stating that he would be shocked if someone alleged illegal behavior on their part.

This recent investigation follows previous allegations of a fundraising scheme to divert money to Adams’ campaign through straw donors. However, these allegations did not implicate the mayor.

NBC New York reported earlier this month that Adams, who is not yet halfway through his first term as mayor, had raised over $2 million for his re-election campaign. Adams, an ex-New York Police Department captain, campaigned as a tough-on-crime Democrat who would increase NYPD staffing and funding.

The ongoing investigation and the recent seizure of his devices are likely to bring about increased scrutiny of Adams’ mayoral administration and its campaign fundraising strategies.
