Collision between bus carrying students and semi-trailer leaves 3 dead, 18 injured in eastern Ohio

At least three people were killed and 18 others were injured in a tragic crash on an Ohio interstate involving a semitrailer and a bus carrying students. The devastating incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. when the semitrailer rear-ended a charter bus transporting students and chaperones from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District to an Ohio School Boards Association conference in Columbus.

Superintendent Derek Varansky expressed the district’s deep concern for those involved, stating, “We understand from law enforcement that there may be multiple serious injuries and we are working to learn the details. We will share news with you as we are able, including our plans for upcoming school days and events.”

In an interview, Licking County Emergency Management Agency Director Sean Grady confirmed the number of deaths and injuries, revealing that a total of 57 people were onboard the bus at the time of the crash. Eighteen individuals from the charter bus were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the crash and the conditions of the injured are yet to be determined. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his condolences and sympathy, calling the crash “our worst nightmare” and offering prayers to the families affected.

The incident involved a total of five vehicles on Interstate 70 West in Licking County, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. Nate Dennis. Tow trucks were seen removing the wreckage from the site as authorities work to investigate the details of the tragic accident.
