Musk’s xAI AI Model Set to Make a Debut
by Pierre Herubel
In recent times, Elon Musk has been making headlines for his outspoken concerns about the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). Many would assume that Musk is an AI naysayer, but what most people don’t know is that the billionaire has his own AI startup called xAI. Launched back in March 2023, xAI’s mission was to “understand the true nature of the universe.” And now, after months of development, xAI is ready to unveil its AI model, although it will only be shared with a select group of individuals.
xAI’s foray into AI technology comes nearly a year after the immense success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which captivated businesses and users worldwide, leading to a widespread adoption of generative AI technology.
In a recent X post, Musk announced, “Tomorrow, @xAI will release its first AI to a select group. In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists.” The announcement came as a surprise to many, as Musk has been critical of Big Tech’s AI efforts and censorship. Earlier this year, he even expressed his intent to develop a maximum truth-seeking AI, with the aim of understanding the nature of the universe, to rival the likes of Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI.
While Musk-owned X, the social media firm formerly known as Twitter, and xAI operate as distinct entities, they maintain a close working relationship. In fact, xAI collaborates with other Musk-affiliated companies, such as Tesla, in its pursuit of AI advancements.
It is worth noting that Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle and a self-proclaimed close friend of Musk, revealed in September that xAI had signed a contract to train its AI model on Oracle’s cloud platform. This partnership showcases the collaborative efforts between industry leaders as they push the boundaries of AI technology.
Musk’s unwavering stance on AI has been a hot topic in recent months. During an interview with Tucker Carlson in April, Musk boldly stated, “AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production, in the sense that it has the potential – however small one may regard that probability, but it is non-trivial – it has the potential of civilization destruction.”
Addressing the crowd at the AI Safety Summit in the UK, Musk reiterated his concerns, saying, “There is some chance, above zero, that AI will kill us all. I think it’s slow, but there is some chance. This also highlights the fragility of human civilization. If you study history, you will realize that every civilization has a sort of lifespan.”
With xAI’s AI model set to hit the market soon, it will be interesting to observe how it fares in comparison to existing AI technologies. Musk’s ambitious venture continues to captivate the tech world, with his determination to understand and control the potential risks associated with AI.
