Unlike previous battery production where Apple played a limited role, the company is taking a more hands-on approach in this initiative. It is even choosing the composition of the battery, including materials for the anode and cathode. Notably, Apple is considering the integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to enhance the battery’s conductivity and subsequently improve its performance.

One significant change in the battery’s design is the replacement of graphite, which is currently used as the secondary battery material. Apple plans to utilize silicon instead, which could potentially lead to shorter charging times and increased overall capacity. However, using silicon brings a challenge: its volume expands during the charging cycle. Nevertheless, Apple seems to have a solution to this issue, as the report claims the company has acquired technology to address and resolve the expansion problem.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the demand for high-performance batteries is increasing as the mobile user experience expands into areas like Metaverse and Mixed Reality (MR). Apple aims to enhance battery performance from the material development stage itself. The ultimate goal is to introduce a battery that has never been commercialized before.

If these reports hold true, the iPhone 17, rumored to launch in 2025, could be the first iPhone to incorporate Apple’s in-house batteries. The introduction of these new batteries would potentially result in a major boost in battery life for future iPhones.
