Canada’s participation in a conclave hosted by the Indian Army in Delhi next week will not be affected by the recent diplomatic tensions between the two countries, according to a senior Indian Army official. The conclave, scheduled for September 26 and 27, aims to develop a common strategy to ensure peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, amid growing concerns over China’s military activities. The strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada escalated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a “potential” Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. India promptly dismissed the allegations as “absurd” and “motivated,” leading to the expulsion of a senior Canadian diplomat. However, Major General Abhinaya Rai, the Additional Director General of Strategic Planning at the Indian Army headquarters, emphasized that the Canadian Army’s participation in the conclave remains unaffected. Major General Rai emphasized the importance of engaging with neighboring countries, referring specifically to the ongoing standoff with China. He assured that the diplomatic and military engagement between India and Canada would continue as planned. A Canadian military official also expressed that the diplomatic row will not impact defense engagement between the two nations. The conclave will be attended by the Army chiefs and delegations from 22 countries, with the US Army serving as co-host. The Indo-Pacific Army Chiefs’ Conclave (IPACC) will focus on topics such as military diplomacy, collaboration among armed forces, and interoperability. Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar highlighted that the event will foster a shared vision and strengthen friendships among participating nations. The IPACC is a biennial event that brings together Army chiefs from the Indo-Pacific region to discuss mutual interests. This year’s conclave holds special significance as it involves the participation of military personnel from various ranks and nationalities. Lieutenant General Kumar expressed gratitude to the US Army, particularly the US Army Pacific, for their co-hosting support. Additionally, the Indo-Pacific Armies Management Seminar (IPAMS), a key conference for land forces in the region, is organized annually by the US Army Pacific in collaboration with a host country.
