Defense Secretary says U.S. conducts strikes in eastern Syria in retaliation for attacks

U.S. Fighter Jets Conduct “Self-Defense Strike” on Iran-Linked Facility in Syria

In a statement released on Wednesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that U.S. fighter jets had carried out a “self-defense strike” on a weapons storage facility in Syria that was being utilized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The strike, which took place in eastern Syria, was directed by President Joe Biden and was described by Austin as a response to a series of attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria by affiliates of the IRGC-Quds Force.

According to a senior defense official, the strike targeted a facility in Maysulun, Syria, which was believed to be storing ammunition. While the official could not confirm any casualties on the ground, they stated that the U.S. was confident that the strike did not result in civilian loss. Additionally, secondary explosions after the strike indicated the presence of explosives at the facility.

The message behind the strike was clear: the U.S. wants Iran to instruct its proxies and militia groups to cease their attacks on U.S. personnel. The senior defense official emphasized that the U.S. seeks to hold Iran accountable for the attacks and expects Iran to take measures to halt the hostilities.

This is not the first time the U.S. has taken action against targets in Syria. In late October, the U.S. launched strikes against Iran-linked targets in response to attacks by Iranian-backed militia groups against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria, resulting in injuries to 46 U.S. service members.

Since October 17th, there have been at least 41 attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, involving one-way attack drones and rockets, according to a defense official. Austin reiterated that President Biden directed the recent action to emphasize that the U.S. will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests. He also stated that the U.S. is prepared to take further necessary measures to protect its people and facilities, while urging against any escalation.
