Desertion charges filed against Travis King, American soldier who crossed into North Korea

Title: U.S. Soldier Accused of Deserting to North Korea Faces Multiple Charges Including Child Pornography Solicitation

In a shocking turn of events, a U.S. soldier who fled to North Korea has been accused of various crimes, including desertion, assaulting fellow soldiers, and soliciting child pornography. Pvt. 2nd Class Travis King, 23, was expelled by North Korea and taken into U.S. custody in China after his daring escape across the fortified border between North and South Korea.

According to the charging sheet, King faces eight counts, with desertion being one of the most prominent charges. The soldier is also accused of soliciting a Snapchat user to create child pornography, as well as possessing a video involving sexually explicit conduct of a minor.

Additional allegations include attempting to escape from U.S. military custody, breaking curfew, physical altercations with other military personnel, and disobedience of orders regarding alcohol consumption.

King’s escape took place on July 18, after being escorted by the U.S. military to an airport near Seoul, where he was supposed to return to the U.S. for potential disciplinary action. However, he abandoned the plan and joined a civilian tour group heading to the Joint Security Area along the Demilitarized Zone. He then broke away from the group and crossed the border without authorization.

Little information is available about King’s time in North Korean custody, and he has not provided public explanations for his actions.

After his return to the U.S. on September 28, King underwent reintegration at Joint Base San Antonio before being transferred to Fort Bliss, Texas. At Fort Bliss, a military commander ordered his pretrial confinement, leading King’s legal team to claim it was an error. A hearing next week will determine whether he will remain confined.

Franklin D. Rosenblatt, King’s lead counsel, emphasized the importance of fairness and urged people to withhold judgment until all the facts are presented. Rosenblatt, who previously represented Bowe Bergdahl, another soldier charged with desertion, stressed the need for caution when dealing with individuals who have returned from captivity.

King’s mother, Claudine Gates, expressed concern about her son’s mental health and called for him to be presumed innocent. Gates expressed gratitude for the support of King’s legal team and expressed hope for her son to have his day in court.

The case of Pvt. Travis King highlights the complexities of military justice and raises questions about the underlying factors that led to his actions. As the legal process unfolds, the truth behind his escape and subsequent accusations will hopefully be revealed.
