On Saturday, thousands of protesters gathered at Marble Arch in central London to demand a ceasefire and an end to the siege on Gaza. Carrying signs and banners, the demonstrators planned to march through the city center, concluding the rally at Downing Street, the official residence of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Last week, a similar march through London’s central shopping district saw an estimated attendance of over 150,000 people.
Meanwhile, Israel’s military has approved plans to expand its operational activities after two weeks of threats of a potential ground invasion. The Israel Defense Forces have deployed soldiers and engaged in field exercises, including reserve services. The 188th brigade is ready near the Gaza Strip, with the determination to bring security to the Israeli people for years to come, said Lt. Commander Or Volozhinsky.
After pressure from US President Joe Biden, Israel has allowed the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. A convoy of 20 trucks crossed the border, providing food, water, and medicine for the more than 2 million Palestinians trapped in Gaza. However, the World Health Organization states that the aid is not enough to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has been exacerbated by tainted water and viruses, putting residents at further risk, especially children. Foreign nationals are also expected to be able to cross into Egypt today.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas is deepening the divide between the United States and its allies on one side and China and Russia on the other. Disagreements among Security Council members hindered efforts to pass a resolution in response to the conflict, highlighting the growing divide. The conflict has claimed the lives of more than 4,000 people in the Gaza Strip and 1,400 people in Israel, with casualties also including citizens from the US, Russia, and China. President Joe Biden has shown support for Israel, while Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin have taken a different approach.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasized the need for a humanitarian ceasefire to ease the delivery of aid in the Gaza Strip. Guterres stated that getting aid into Gaza is not a normal humanitarian operation, but an operation in a war zone. He called for an end to the punishment of the Gaza people and urged the international community to support a ceasefire.
Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, condemned Israeli strikes on Gaza during a phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Kakar expressed Pakistan’s strong condemnation of the aggression against innocent Palestinians and called on the international community to halt the bloodshed. Both leaders stressed the importance of lifting the blockade on Gaza to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and medical assistance. Pakistan has sent its first batch of aid to Palestinian people, landing in Egypt.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for a permanent solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians during a peace summit in Cairo. El-Sisi warned against the potential displacement of Palestinians into the Sinai desert, emphasizing that the Palestinian people do not wish to leave their land. He called for the establishment of a sovereign independent state for Palestinians, upholding their civil rights. King Abdullah of Jordan echoed these sentiments, criticizing world leaders for their neglect of the Palestinian issue.
The recent release of two Hamas-held hostages has sparked hope for potential negotiations. Qatar has been actively working towards this release and plans to continue dialogue with both Israelis and Hamas. While negotiations face many hurdles, the news of the release raises expectations for progress in reaching a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
