Musk’s X files lawsuit against Media Matters for report on ads alongside hate groups’ content.

Elon Musk’s social media company X has recently filed a lawsuit against liberal advocacy group Media Matters for America, alleging that the group produced a report that unfairly placed advertisers’ posts alongside neo-Nazi and white nationalist content to “drive advertisers from the platform and destroy X Corp.” Media Matters has dismissed the lawsuit as “frivolous.”

The lawsuit comes amid a wave of advertisers fleeing the site formerly known as Twitter due to concerns about their ads being associated with pro-Nazi content and hate speech. IBM, NBCUniversal, and parent company Comcast have all ceased advertising on X following the Media Matters report, which claimed their ads appeared next to material praising Nazis. This setback is detrimental to X, as it relies heavily on ad revenue from big brands.

Media Matters report also cited instances of ads from Apple, Oracle, Amazon, NBA Mexico, and others being placed alongside antisemitic and white nationalist hashtags. X alleges that Media Matters manipulated algorithms on the platform to create images of advertisers’ paid posts next to racist content, portraying this as a common occurrence on the platform.

Media Matters has defended its reporting, while also facing an investigation by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for possible fraudulent activity related to its report.

Meanwhile, X CEO Linda Yaccarino has expressed the company’s firm stance against discrimination, responding to concerns about the platform’s content. Musk has been criticized for his handling of antisemitic messages on the platform and has attracted further controversy due to his own posts during the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas.
